Unspoken Thoughts

Writer's picture: Richard PRichard P

Does the therapist care at all about me?

Am I just a billable hour?

Is this therapist really human?

If I pinch him, will he say, "Ouch!"?

Can he empathize with the mess I am in?

Does the therapist have what it takes to deal with a person of my race or gender or faith?

Can he accept my differences?

Does the therapist feel contempt for me for being such a foul-up?

Does he seem at all pleased to see me?

Am I greeted with any sort of warmth or goodwill?

After a therapy session, do I feel encouraged to go on?

Do I leave most therapy sessions in tears?

The answers to these questions are very important. The way that the

patient perceives the quality of the therapeutic relationship is believed to account for around 30% of the outcome of

psychotherapy.
